Circus amenities in Finland, before and now

The road for the circus in Finland has been a rocky one ever since it arrived in our country. Finland’s remote location kept caravans roaming mainland Europe away, and our atmosphere of hesitation towards strangeness caused a jungle of bans, ordinances, laws and regulations a hundred years ago. The removal of these, as well as lifting circus arts alongside other arts, was not achieved until the 1990s. Sirkus Finlandia started its operations in the 1970s and is the most successful circus in Finnish history. We want to contribute to the appreciation of circus art, to improving the conditions and standards for circus animals, to facilitating tax practices, to finding a skilled workforce and to simplifying visa and work permit practices. And that is why we belong to the European Circus Association (ECA) – as a member we can promote these, among other things.
